19 April 2012, 15:32Alloys Musyoka

A somber mood engulfed Mere village in Ganda location in Malindi district within Kilifi County on Tuesday when two people drowned in a 135-foot well which they were cleaning.

The two deceased were hired by a neighbor to clean a well at the village when they met their death.

Malindi fire brigades responded quickly and managed to retrieve the body of the two deceased persons in an exercised that took almost five hours.

The area Chief Mr. Jeremiah Ngumbao Kitunga told journalists that the two men had been hired to clean a 135-foot well which was dirty by their neighbor before the drowned.

“The two accidentally felled into the well and drowned when they were trying to clean it,” said Chief Kitunga.

He said that one of the deceased had descended at the bottom of the well to clean using a rope leaving his colleague outside but he drowned before he was noticed later.

Kitunga went further to add that his colleague then tried to pull out the rope but he felt nothing forcing himself to call neighbors and then with their help he descended at the bottom of the well to find out what was wrong with his friend.

The Chief said it was when he found his colleague body floating dead and tied him with the rope before he was pulled out staying behind also to be pulled out but he also drowned.

“He had gone to find what had happened to his colleague and after he made effort to pull out his body and remained behind he also drowned,” noted Kitunga.
