Somber mood has engulfed Jimba location in Watamu, Malindi district after two children were burnt to death in their house when their parents locked them up and left to a drinking spree on Sunday night.

The two aged 4, and 2 years had been locked up in their bedroom by their parents before their house caught fire burning them beyond recognition.

Watamu area Chief Mr. Michael Kaingu Lenga said the fire which burnt the two children to death was caused by exploding of hurricane lamp which was left lighting the room at night.

“A hurricane lamp that was left lighting the room by the parents’ of the deceased is the one which caused the fire after it exploded,” said the provincial administrator.

He said the mourning parents might be arrested for neglecting their children.

“The two parents might be arrested due to neglect because they locked up their children and left just to drink,” he said.

Remains of the two deceased were taken to Malindi district Hospital Mortuary.

Malindi police Boss Mr. Kiprono Langa’t confirmed the incident and said the parents of the deceased had not been arrested.

”We have not arrested the two parents but I will come to you later when I gather more information of the incident,” said Mr. Lang’at.
