16 AP officers escape death in Nyeri road accident

Nyeri - A squad of 16 Administration Police (AP) officers on Wednesday morning escaped death by a whisker following a road accident at Classic area along Nyeri-Othaya road.
The officers were heading to Nyeri town for a scheduled briefing by their bosses before their Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle collided head on with a lorry ferrying bread.
Three officers were serious injured while 13 others sustained minor injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the police vehicle was trying to avoid hitting another saloon car when the accident happened.
Mary Nyawira, who was at the scene said a motorcycle (boda boda) rider suddenly overtook the saloon car forcing the driver of the car to brake instantly.

“The driver of the police car tried to stop but realized that he would hit the saloon car from behind,” said Nyawira.
The three officers who were unconscious were rescued and rushed to Outspan Hospital.
Another officer suffered a cut on the chin from the nozzle of her rifle.
Nyeri County AP commander, Njue Njagi who arrived on the scene said the hospitalized officers also had serious injuries on their hands and legs.
“Three of our officers were badly injured while others suffered minor bruises and cuts,” said Njue.
However, the driver of the lorry and another occupant escaped from the accident unhurt.
