12 days later, agony for families as still no news on KDF soldiers

27 January 2016, 15:49 Victor Tinto in Eldoret

Nairobi - 12 days after Al Adde attack in Somalia, the fate of Kenya Defence Forces KDF soldiers is yet to be known, with families still in the dark.

In Eldoret, families of the missing soldiers were in sombre mood as they awaited news on the fate of their loved ones who were in Somalia.

Apart from those who have survived the attack and those injured, families have yet to be informed on the fate of their loved ones.

News24 spoke to 6 separate families who stated that they had been told to offer DNA samples but were yet to be informed of the fate of their sons and husbands.

One of the families is that of Daniel Kipkorir who served in Al Adde at the time of the attack.

His brother Brian says that they are yet to be told what next.

" We do not know what next. We handed over the samples 9 days ago and to date we are yet to be told what next," he said at the Moi Barracks in Eldoret where there was a requiem mass to be held in honour of the dead and missing soldiers.

Military chiefs have remained tight lipped over the number of casualties in Al Adde even though reports indicate it could be as high as 100 killed.

No families have as yet been given bodies of their loved ones to bury in the aftermath of the attack either.

" We hope that the President will tell us something because we do not know what next," Fatuma Alli, mother of officer Hussein Alli who is also missing told News24.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to attend the service together with Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari and Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud.
