10,000 police officer recruitment to be done afresh
10 April 2015, 18:24
Nairobi - A fresh police recruitment exercise will begin in 10 days time, the National Police Service Commision NPSC has announced.
The recruitment of the 10,000 officers was cut short last year after corruption allegations brought the process into disrepute and forced the Independent Police Oversight Authority IPOA to disown the process.
The NPSC had announced that there would be some areas where the process would be cancelled but that was put to bed by a court order which annulled the process in the meantime.
But with debate raging after president Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the 10,000 recruits to report for training after the Garissa terrorist attack, a move that had been termed illegal by various bodies, the NPSC has decided to bite the bullet and redo the whole process.
" The police recruitment exercise will be held on 20 April 2015, a statement from the NPSC said Friday.
The process will be done afresh throughout the country and according to the NPSC, the candidates that had earlier been chosen will get the chance to go through the process again.
" We invite the prior chosen recruits to pass through the exercise again," the statement added.
The new recruits will report for training immediately after they are chosen.
They will undergo a 9 month training in various police colleges around the country in efforts to ready them for the task of dealing with the rising threats against the country.
