10-year-old altar boy commits suicide after quarrel with mom

01 September 2015, 15:11 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - Shock and grief has gripped residents of Rititi village in Mathira Nyeri County after a 10-year-old boy committed suicide following a quarrel with his mother over schoolwork.

Andrew Kuria, who was also an altar boy at Karatina Town Catholic church, was a Class five pupil at Karatina DEB primary school.

He hanged himself in the family’s avocado tree while his mother, Christine Wambui was doing her daily chores inside their three-bedroom house.

It was until after about half an hour that Wambui found out that her son had not completed her schoolwork but when she called out his name, he did not respond. When she went out she found his lifeless body dangling on the tree.

At his former school, teachers and pupils were also coming to terms with the death as they described the boy as respectful and promising, adding that he aspired to become a pilot.

The school headteacher, Vincent Mwangi said the boy was okay when he left the institution for August holidays and had not exhibited any signs of stress.

He however noted that early this year, Kuria had threatened to kill himself but was counseled by teachers.

Mathira West police boss, David Kemboi confirmed the incident adding that investigations have commenced while they boy's body was removed to Karatina hospital morgue awaiting post mortem before burial.
