Nairobi - 1 person has died after a building under construction collapsed in Ongata Rongai town.
The building collapsed early Sunday morning.
The person who died was a construction worker who was asleep in the building when it collapsed.
It was a six stories building.
According to witnesses, the building collapsed just after 2 AM Sunday and that it was not yet ready for use by tenants.
Workers said that to their knowledge, they had performed legal building procedures and were surprised it fell.
" I am surprised. We have taken our time with it," a worker at the site John Njenga told News24.
4 others were injured in the incident.
Kajiado County minister for public works Daniel Ntikosia however said that his office had warned of trouble at the site.
" We had warned of the illegal building processes and the building was being illegally built," he told News24.
He however agreed that the County government had approved the construction in the first place.
Members of the Kenya Red Cross and Police were present to perform rescue operations and save those trapped in the rubble.
Ongata Rongai is roughly 20 kilometres from Nairobi's Central Business District and is one of the fastest growing towns in the country.
