Schumi: GoPro video OK for hearing

10 January 2014, 14:17

Grenoble - Video from the sport camera strapped to Michael Schumacher's helmet as he fell and slammed his head on to an exposed rock while skiing can be used by investigators.

The information came from a source who wished to remain unnamed but is close to the probe into the accident.

"It's an important document," he claimed as investigators continued to probe the cause of the December 29 fall in the French Alps that left the Formula 1 legend in a coma. Insurance companies could face a huge payout - one way or the other - depending on evidence that comes to light.

It had been unclear whether the camera was on at the time of the incident or indeed whether the data on it would be clear enough to use.

The source did not specify whether the camera could provide any guide to Schumacher's speed before he fell on a small off-piste section between regular slopes at the Meribel resort.

French investigators attempting to determine responsibility for the accident are focusing on the retired race driver's speed, as well as whether the limits of the ski runs next to the accident site - and indeed the exposed rock - were adequately marked.

They are also examining if the safety releases on Schumacher's skis.

Prosecutors involved in the probe are due to brief the news media on Wednesday (Jan 8 2014) morning.
