Ricciardo replacement a Russian

22 October 2013, 16:32 Alan Baldwin

London, England - Russian teenager Daniil Kvyat will replace Daniel Ricciardo at Toro Rosso for the 2014 Formula 1 season.

The announcement means Russia could have two drivers on the grid when it hosts its first grand prix in Sochi in 2014.

Sauber is already planning to add 18-year-old Sergey Sirotkin to its line-up, provided he can obtain a superlicence, as part of a deal with the team's new Russian backers.

Toro Rosso said 19-year-old Kvyat, who has been racing in F3 and GP3, would partner Jean-Eric Vergne. Ricciardo will replace Mark Webber, who is leaving the sport at the end of the 2013 season, at Red Bull alongside Sebastian Vettel.

Team boss Franz Tost said: "We are pleased to continue our policy of bringing on drivers from the Red Bull junior programme. He impressed us with a strong performance and very informative technical feedback at the young driver test in Silverstone (July 2013). This suggests that the basic qualities from which he can progress are all in place.

"Daniil can be sure that we will use all our experience of training youngsters to give him the best possible start to his F1 career."

Kvyat has one win, five poles and podium finishes in F3 in 2013 and is also still in a position to win the 2013 GP3 championship.
Kvyat said: "Ever since I began karting I've wanted to get to F1 and now that wish will become reality. I had a brief taste of working with the Toro Rosso team, when I drove for them at the Silverstone test and I enjoyed the experience very much."

Russia is scheduled to host a GP in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, which is also hosting the Winter Olympics, in October 2014 but had no F1 driver.

The only Russian driver to have competed in the sport so far is Vitaly Petrov, who raced for Renault and Caterham from 2010 - 2012 with third place in Australia in 2011 his best result.
