Pirelli tyre change delayed

14 June 2013, 12:56

England - Pirelli has ruled out changing its Formula 1 tyres until August due to teams failing to reach agreement at the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix.

The tyre maker announced compounds for the next three races (Britain, Germany and Hungary) and said it had abandoned a plan to introduce a new tyre at Silverstone on June 30 2013.

Pirelli said: "The new tyres, which were brought to the Friday free practice sessions in Canada, could not be tested sufficiently due to rain." Teams had also failed to agree unanimously about introducing the changes.

Its tyres have been designed to encourage more pit stops and overtaking by losing performance quicker but that has led to criticism that drivers have had to make too many stops and reduce speed to make them last.

The tyres have also suffered from delamination - the tread peels off while the tyre remains inflated.

Pirelli said: "A change in the tyre production process should now ensure that the delamination issue has been addressed."

F1's sole tyre provider has been in the headlines all season after some teams, Red Bull among the most vocal, complained that the 2013 tyres did not allow proper racing.

Pirelli is also in the spotlight for conducting a tyre test with Mercedes at the 2013 Spanish GP that has led to both parties being summoned to a tribunal in Paris in June 2013.

Drivers will use hard and medium tyres at the 2013 British GP (June 30) and in Hungary (July 28).  Teams will use medium and soft tyres at the 2013 German GP on July 7.
