Massa future: 'There's no hurry'

11 July 2013, 18:03 Alan Baldwin

Ferrari has assured driver Felipe Massa of its support despite the veteran scoring only 12 points from his previous four Formula 1 races.

After nine grands prix Massa has 57 points compared to team mate Fernando Alonso's 123.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said: "Felipe is fully aware he can count on our total confidence in him. I hope he will soon secure the results that will show his talent to the full, such as the great starts he pulled off at the last two GP's.

"The future? We'll talk about that further down the line - there's no hurry."

Massa's contract with Ferrari will end at the same time as the 2013 season and he's having to endure regular speculation about his future though with the new V6 engine to be introduced in 2014 and major changes in the regulations continuity and experience could count in his favour.

Massa said in June that he was confident he would still be in Formula 1 in 2014 and had a good chance of staying with Ferrari.

Team principal Stefano Domenicali also expressed continued support for the driver despite Massa spinning out and retiring at the 2013 German Grand Prix. "I always said we have a lot of confidence in Felipe," he asserted. "I know this is a very critical, very tough moment because he is the first to be disappointed. The only thing to do is to stay behind him and work hard with him because we need him to make sure we are fighting for the Constructors' championship."

Ferrari is third on 180 points, three points behind Mercedes and 67 behind leading team Red Bull. There are 10 races left in 2013.
