Hit list: Top stolen luxury cars

01 August 2013, 16:34

Michigan - Mercedes-Benz was the most sought-after luxury brand among US car thieves from 2009 through 2012, according to a report from the US National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).

The Detroit News reported that more C-Class models (485) were stolen during that period than any other luxury vehicle. Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class were ranked in the top ten with New York City the most targeted region. In total, there were 4384 luxury vehicles reported stolen from 2009 – 2012, reports the NICB.

The second-most-stolen luxury car was the BMW 3 Series, followed by the Infiniti G Series.

Mercedes-Benz spokeswomen Donna Boland said: “The more desirable the vehicle, the more attractive the vehicle is to thieves. A significant number of Mercedes reported stolen are recovered, some very swiftly, thanks to our Mbrace system, which includes a stolen vehicle tracker.”

New York City, including Long Island and northern New Jersey, reported 806 thefts, followed by Los Angeles and Miami. California had the most luxury thefts of any state at 1063, followed by Florida (674) and Los Angeles 491.

Top luxury vehicle thefts:

1 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 485
2 BMW 3 Series 471
3 Infiniti G Series 405
4 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 381
5 Cadillac CTS 326
6 BMW 5 Series 256
7 Lincoln MKZ 226
8 Acura TSX 190
9 Lexus IS 177
10 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 163

Of the 4384 luxury vehicles, 713 (or 16.3%) remain unrecovered as of July 31 2013. According to the NCIB: “These are vehicles that are more likely to have been targeted by sophisticated organized theft rings which dismantle stolen vehicles for parts, VIN switch them to resell to unsuspecting buyers, or export them to other countries.”

The vehicle with the highest recovery rate was the Cadillac CTS at 91% while the S-Class the worst at about 59%, reports the NICB. The Infiniti G Series had the highest number of unrecovered thefts by volume with 83, followed by the E-Class (80) and C-Class (78).

The S-Class and the 7 Series had the highest unrecovered rates with 41.1% and 36.5% respectively.
