Ferrari boss: 'We won't give up'

22 August 2013, 17:06

Rome, Italy - Ferrari hasn't given up hope of winning the 2013 Formula 1 Drivers' title despite recent struggles.

Team principal Stefano Domenicali made the comment on the team's website.

Title hope Fernando Alonso, a double champion, failed to reach the podium in either of July's races Germany and Hungary, allowing current triple champion Sebastian Vettel to increase his lead over the Spaniard to 39 points.

Kimi Raikonnen also moved a point ahead of him into second overall by finishing second in both races while fourth-placed Lewis Hamilton closed the gap to Alonso to nine points by winning the most recent race, in Hungary.

Ferrari's struggled for pace recently but Domenicali believes the team can bounce back. "There's everything to play for. We've gone through this before, as recently as 2012," he said. "Nine races (left) means 225 Drivers' points are available - the goals we set ourselves at the start of the season are still attainable. It's true we've gone through a difficult period, especially in July, so now is the time to react in the way that Ferrari people know well.

"Our task is very simple: give Fernando and Felipe the quickest cars possible."

The F1 circus is setting up camp for the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend.
