Driving down 'My Electric Avenue'

26 July 2013, 12:02

England - EA technology, Drayson Racing and Nissan are collaborating on a project to investigate what an “Electric Vehicle (EV) street of the future” might look like. It’s called My Electric Avenue and it’s being rolled out in England.

The project is seeking 10 “clusters”, each with a minimum of 10 neighbours, to drive an EV for 18 months to examine the impact of charging a group of battery vehicles using the local electricity network.

Participants will drive an electric Nissan Leaf at a subsidised rate while also testing technology which monitors and controls battery-charging. All participants should either live on the same street or in very close geographical proximity. Participation in the project is subject to eligibility and availability.

The My Electric Avenue project was launched in June 2013 and there have already been more than 700 registrations. The first clusters are reportedly signing up.

The project is primarily looking to recruit residential clusters of EV users and recruitment for the project has been led by locals who have taken it upon themselves to find other people in their area to form a cluster.

Drayson Racing is looking at becoming one of the first workplace charging clusters in the My Electric Avenue project.

Former UK government minister Lord Drayson, owner of Drayson Racing, said: “Electric vehicles have a key role to play in helping to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions so it is essential to carry out research to ensure that the local electricity network can cope with their growing numbers. Drayson Racing is pleased to be leading the way in bringing together a cluster of local businesses to test the effects of EV charging at work.”

But what happens if a group of EVs need to be recharged at the same time?

The project claims: “If a number of EV's on the same feeder were being charged at the same time, without preparation, the load on the local electricity network may exceed the sub-station's capacity. My Electric Avenue aims to provide a solution for this potential problem."

Forecasts show that sales of electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and pure battery cars, will increase.
