BMW M6 to blast into Geneva

13 February 2012, 14:13

The latest 6 Series range will have the chance to show off its M-finery at the upcoming Geneva auto show. Both the Coupe and Convertible body styles have been shown ahead of their big reveals.

Unsurprisingly, the headline act in both models is the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 seen most recently in the all-new M5, but also used to great effect initially in the X5 and X6 M models.

The high-revving V8 uses BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology with twin scroll twin turbos, Valvetronic fully variable valve control and addictive power delivery. The engine is good for 412kW from 6000 to 7000rpm (the maximum engine speed is 7200rpm) while the peak torque generated is 680Nm from 1500rpm.

BMW claims the Coupe will cover the 0 – 100km/h sprint in 4.2 seconds (M6 Coupe) or 4.3 seconds (M6 Convertible) before topping out at 250km/h. If that top speed, however, is not quite up to your racing driver ambitions, it can be topped up to 305km/h with the M Driver’s Package. Active M Differential ensures drive is variably distributed between the rear wheels for increased traction and stability during quick lane changes and when accelerating out of corners.

The twin powerhouses also strike a balance between performance and fuel consumption, since fuel consumption compared with its predecessors is down by at least 30%. With the help of auto start-stop and more refined Efficient Dynamics technology as standard and a host of weight-saving materials, the average fuel consumption is 9.9 litres/100km for the coupe and 10.3 litres/100km for the convertible.

Weight-saving techniques include the coupe’s roof constructed from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, aluminium doors and bonnets for both models and side panels made from thermoplastic. Boot lids and the convertible’s roof cover, are made from a glass fibre composite material.

The chassis has been significantly spruced up to M specification with bespoke front and rear axle kinematics. M-specific Dynamic Damper Control, DSC with M Dynamic mode, Servotronic steering and a high-performance braking system are standard. An option worth splurging on would probably be the lightweight M carbon ceramic brakes with higher fade and wear resistance.

Visually, the Ms are distinguished by design features including a new kidney grille and striking lower air intake, flared wheelarches, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors and side skirts and a rear apron with a diffuser splitting the two pairs of twin tailpipes.

Inside the leather-lined cabin with carbon-fibre contrasts you’ll find special M control features including a new leather steering wheel, gear selector and car set-up controls, exclusive sport seats and a specific instrument cluster.
