Should you have sex during pregnancy?

24 July 2016, 17:06 LadyFay

How does it work?

The baby is protected by the amniotic fluid by the strong muscles of the uterus, which act as a cushion, and the thick mucus plug that seals the cervix also helps protect against any kind of infection.

Sexual desire during pregnancy depends on each woman’s sex drive. Some women are turned off and some have a heightened libido for almost the entire pregnancy.

During the first trimester, hormonal fluctuations and nausea often reduces a woman’s sexual desire but this tends to pass soon. As the pregnancy progresses, intercourse could feel better than ever because of increased vaginal moistness and greater blood flow to the pelvic area.

The engorgement of the genitals makes the vagina swell slightly and this heightens sensations during love making for both parties.

If, while pregnant, you go off full penetrative sex all together, try to look at alternative ways to stimulate each other. Encourage your partner to focus on your clitoris to help you reach an orgasm.

Introduce a clitoral vibrator into your love making. They feel great on the clitoris and any other area that tickles your fancy (and his) from your nipples to his perineum and anywhere in between.

Your pregnant body can be a huge turn-on

Remember, even though you might be feeling bloated and unattractive, most men see their pregnant partner’s curves as the ultimate sign of fertility. So don’t be surprised if your man is very turned on.

At the same time let him know if anything feels uncomfortable and suggest alternative erotic activities, such as mutual pleasuring and oral sex. Your giving oral sex is fine and it’s also safe for you to receive it, as long as you warn your partner not to blow air into your vagina as this could cause an air embolus.

To make this activity even sweeter for you both, invest in a bottle of flavoured lubricant. It will make lovemaking a lot more fun and it tastes great!

Don't forget to talk to each other

Whatever changes you might need to make to your love making, it is also very important to keep the pillow talk going.

You need each others support and reassurance more than ever, because even though you’re both eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new addition to the family, there are bound to be concerns about how the pregnancy and baby might change your relationship.

That’s why physical intimacy is also a necessity. Let your creativity take over and keep in mind, you can kiss and caress and find new and exciting ways to pleasure one another.
