Wedding vows to a little stepdaughter

Wedding vows can be very difficult to write (and speak). It’s hard to express the extent of commitment being made and to get through them without choking up. Brian and Whitney shared their short wedding video, and, we have to say, the part where Brian takes the time to say vows to Whitney’s daughter from a previous marriage, Brielle, got us sobbing at our desks.
We came across this beautiful expression of love over atJezebel.com.
Here’s what he says to his future stepdaughter:
“I promise to always hold your hand and skip with you down the street and bring comfort to your life. I vow to make you say your prayers before you eat. I promise to read you stories at night, to always tuck you in real tight. I vow to show you how a man should treat a woman in my relationship with your mother and above all else, I vow to protect you, care for you and love you forever.”

The whole video is actually really well made, but we loved that Brian was happily walking into a commitment with two people.
Being a step-parent can be tricky; some relationships collapse for this very reason. It’s a challenge getting to know someone else’s children, and it may be difficult if the kids struggle to accept a new person in their parent’s life.
We often hear of parents that struggle to adapt to life as step-parents and from parents themselves who grew up with step-parents that didn’t treat them well.
Issues such as differing parenting styles can cause tension- for example, the step-parent may have different opinions about chores, discipline and even simple things like how much time a child should be allowed to watch TV.
Another issue which can upset the balance is if there are two sets of stepchildren coming together to live in the same house. They may take time to settle down and their parents will have to ensure that the kids are treated fairly and equally.
Then again, although step-parents may enter the family with fear and trepidation, there are also loads of instances where the children get on with their new step-parent like a house on fire.
