Top 4 dates!

18 August 2015, 08:08

Whether you’re young and in love or whether you’ve been together for 40 years… these remain winners:

Beach or forest picnic:

You’ll need a friend to help you with this one if you want to keep it a surprise from your date.

Choose a spot in nature (beach/ park/ garden/ farm) and decorate with picnic blanket, candles and wild flowers. Pack a basket with fruit, fresh bread, spreads and a variety of cheeses. Put a bottle of champagne on ice. Ask your friend to man your spot while you fetch your date. Arrange for him/her to leave just as you near the spot. Instant romance.

-Choose a safe place: crime is unfortunately a reality
-You might need insect repellent candles
-Remember to take warm clothes as it can cool off unexpectedly when night falls
-Choose food that is easily eaten by hand

Home-made romance:

Invite your partner over to your house (or if they’re already living there, just make sure they come home directly after work). Leave work an hour earlier and do some gourmet shopping. Buy stuff she/he likes and take time to cook it properly.

Lay the table with your finest linen, crockery and cutlery. And place candles (unlit please) strategically around your bedroom. With rose petals scattered on the bed. (Just so you know, fresh ones stain, so used dried ones).
When your love comes home, guide her/him into a softly lit previously drawn bath while you do the finishing touches on the food. Eat, drink and erm, be merry.

-Make sure your housemates/ children/ parents etc are away and you have the house to yourself
-Switch your phones off (a must with all dates, in fact)
-Don’t cook anything too complicated.
-Don’t serve enormous portions. Remember, you still have the rose-petaled bed to look forward too.

Fancy dinner and a night at a hotel/guesthouse:

For a certain type of girl or guy, there’s nothing quite like a grand night out. Warn her in advance so she has time for the joys of careful grooming and lingerie shopping.

Dress in your finest and treat her to an oysters and champagne type of meal. Be witty and charming and give her plenty of heartfelt compliments. Then take her upstairs to your suite. It would be great if you actually carried her into the bedroom…

-This is an expensive date so don’t do it when you’re budgeting.
-Don’t do it on the first 3 dates. It’s sleazy and you’re setting an impossible standard.
-Remember to pack toothbrushes and toothpaste. And contact lens juice. And birth control pills. Etc.

Snuggly pizza and DVD night:

This is ideal for a cold winter night. If your couch isn’t big enough, make a makeshift bed on the floor. Dress in jammies (both of you) and snuggle under the duvet. Order take-away pizza and watch a movie that you both loved. Drink hot chocolate, feed each other pizza and fool around under the covers.

-Warn him/her that it will be a stay-at-home-and-cuddle date. You don’t want him to arrive dressed to kill and expecting a night on the town.
-Steer clear of romantic comedies. They’re generally very unsexy.
-Don’t panic if she/ he falls asleep in your arms. It’s romantic, really.
