Teen's death selfie

18 June 2014, 11:57

Abuja - An alleged attempt to take a selfie at the top of a cliff in Taranto, Italy, led to a 16-year-old girl losing her footing and plummeting down onto the rocks below. Her injuries were too severe for doctors to save her, according to the Mirror.

The teen was travelling with a school group to the tourist town when the accident occurred.

The incident highlights a popular trend among young people. Although teens taking pictures of themselves has now become part of popular culture, there may be risks to the teen, especially when distracted in a potentially hazardous area.

More selfie tragedies

In April 2014 a 17-year-old girl in Russia plunged to her death after she climbed onto a railway bridge to take a selfie. She lost her footing and, while falling, tried to grab the live cables for support. She was instantly electrocuted before falling to the concrete below, reported Closer.

In North Carolina a woman had apparently been taking selfies while driving and posting them online before a head-on collision which killed her. She’d also been posting messages to social media, including a reference to Pharrell Williams’ song Happy: “The happy song makes me HAPPY!”, she had typed, according to Sky News.

Don't get distracted

These incidences resulted in fatalities, but there are many more cases of teens taking risks to get the ultimate shot. Some are climbing onto the rooftops of buildings and others risking their lives in moving vehicles (or nearby to them).

Apart from injury or death, there is also a risk that your distracted teen may get robbed for their mobile device.
