Should pubic hair be censored?

12 February 2015, 21:27

Nairobi - Earlier this week, Instagram was at the centre of a double-standards debate. The popular picture sharing app was under scrutiny, after they banned Australian web magazine, Sticks and Stone’s most recent post: a photo showing a model’s untrimmed bikini line.

Instagram’s nudity policies have been subject to much controversy over the years. The latest one, we guess, is called: "Eew female pubes".

What was the double standard you ask? Well, we are 100%, no 110% sure, that a photo of a male model showing his pubes in a photo shoot would have been just fine and dandy for Instagram.

For instance, Sticks and Stones posted a shoot starring two men, shopping bags and pubes 2 months ago. This is fine, but on a woman it’s indecent and unkind to people’s eyes?! Is this 2015?

Luckily, Instagram has since apologised and reactivated the magazine’s account. After much criticism, an Instagram spokesperson told the Huffington Post the following in a statement:

"We try hard to find a good balance between allowing people to express themselves creatively and having policies in place to maintain a comfortable experience for our global and culturally diverse community. This is one reason why our guidelines put limitations on nudity, but we recognize that we don’t always get it right. In this case, we made a mistake and have since restored the account."
