Nairobi - When Shelby Mangani from Ankeny, Iowa visited her doctor because of a pain in her side, she had no idea just how much her life was about to change.
According to BuzzFeed, Shelby visited her doctor with what she describes as a "sharp pain" in her side and after an examination her doctor told her that he thought she was pregnant. They quickly performed an ultrasound and discovered that Shelby was not only 34 weeks pregnant but she was expecting twins!
The mom-to-be was rushed to the ER where she underwent an emergency C-section and a little over an hour later, Shelby went from having no idea she was pregnant to being a mom of 2.
The special twins were born weighing less than 2kgs each. Their names are Anna and Ava.
What makes "mono mono" twins special?
These little girls were more than just a surprise to their parents, they are also extremely special. The twins are known as "mono mono" or monoamniotic twins.
Monoamniotic twins are rare as they share an amniotic sac, unlike regular twins that have their own amniotic sacs in the placenta.
Mono mono twins are so rare that it only affects 1% of all pregnancies. The risks are very high as these identical babies run the risk of becoming wrapped in each other's umbilical cords. Unfortunately these have the rather low survival rate of only 50%.
These aren't the first monoamniotic twins we've seen in the news year though. Earlier in 2014, another set of mono mono twins made headlines after being born via C-section and then immediately holding hands. The image took the Internet by storm and it was one of the first times that many people had even heard of mono mono twins at all.
