'I have nothing to wear to work!' Sound familiar?

06 February 2015, 13:10 Tracy Gold

There is no doubt that professional work-wear requirements aren’t what it used to be.  In some cases, the move from formal to more relaxed borders on the side of sloppy.

While we can enjoy the freedom of more relaxed working environment, I still think that creating a good professional image, within the context of your role and industry, is important.

How you dress affects the way you are perceived and how you feel about yourself.

For those who struggle with putting together a good working wardrobe, I’ve listed a few of my top work wardrobe staples.

The styles and colours of these items will vary greatly depending on the look you want to create, so use them as a guideline rather than a hard and fast rule.

Basic jacket:
A jacket in a neutral colour, that works with most of your work wardrobe, in a fit that complements your shape and a style that reflects your personality is a great start.

It doesn’t even have to be black… think outside the box. Alternatives may be silver grey, nude, white, ivory, navy etc.

Basic pair of trousers:
A classic pair of trousers that suits your shape is a winner piece.

Opting for a classic cut rather than the latest trendy style will mean it will stand the test of time, especially if you are paying a high price tag for good quality.

Make sure your trousers mix and match well with your existing tops, blouses and jacket.

Classic skirt:
A printed or plain colour skirt can work well depending on your existing wardrobe.

If you have lots of plain colour tops and blouses, a printed skirt can add an element of fun, but if your tops are in an array of colours and prints, you will get more wear out of a neutral skirt.

Finding a fit and length that works for you may take a bit of trying on, but persevere.  Your perfect skirt is waiting to be discovered.

Pair of classic shoes that go with everything:
You need to be practical when it comes to work shoes, especially if you are on your feet a lot.  A heel always looks better than flats, but that doesn’t have to mean stilettos'.

A wedge or block heel may work better for your foot, offering comfort and style.

A dress:
Dresses are so easy to wear, especially if you travel for work. Printed dresses work well to disguise the less loved bits and styles that fit in the waist and flair at the hem will never let you down.

If you go to work functions frequently, select a dress that can easily take you from day to night with a slight change of accessories.

Fun personality pieces:
Your professional image does need to fit with the image of the company you work for and it needs to reflect who you are as an individual.

Adding colour, print, style and accessories is an easy way to do that without having to compromise either.

If you work in a fairly conservative corporate environment, you can wear a classic dress in a print or a tailored black suit with a colourful blouse.

If you work in a very casual environment, you can wear a pair of dark denim jeans with a classic jacket and a pair of funky heels without looking overdressed.
