Could circumcision save your sex life?

08 September 2014, 11:51

Cape Town - 53-year-old Felicia and her husband Tony Hess (56 years old) were having serious problems in the bedroom when Felicia became frustrated by the fact that her husband couldn't sustain an erection.

Felicia explained that though she had experienced menopause she still felt sexually aroused. But, unfortunately, her husband didn't seem to share her desire for sex.

“He would sit and watch TV and ignore me, even when I stood naked in front of him, rubbing myself!"

Felicia said that the situation became so bad that she considered getting another partner, but felt would have to be a last resort.

A friend suggested that they try Viagra but Felicia was concerned that that it may affect Tony’s general health.

Sex with erection problems

One of the intimate problems they had was that, while he was inside her, his foreskin would turn inside out – like an umbrella in a high wind – and he would withdraw to sort it out because he was afraid it would tear.

“Sometimes this was when I was on the edge so it would spoil everything," Felicia explained.

“One day I phoned him to say they were doing circumcisions at the clinic and I begged him to go, but he was afraid.

“That night, when I got home I was very tired and I turned the TV on and sat down to watch. Tony was in the bath and he called me to come.  [He showed me]... the gauze on his penis. I was so excited.  I looked at it from all angles because I couldn’t believe he had finally done it."

Is circumcision linked to better sex?

When it finally healed "it was much, much better!"

"It felt different: much smoother. And it is so much better now that we don’t have to stop to pull the foreskin back,” said Joan.

Tony said that after the procedure it has been much easier for him to have an erection and to climax.

"Now we have relations once a week. Before it was hardly ever. People say: ‘what is a banana without a skin?’ I say it is much better.”

This article is published in support of the 'Clever Dick Campaign': A campaign to promote medical male circumcision.

Circumcision, which can be done in 30 minutes, protects men against HIV, as well as sexually transmitted infections.
