Audi crowns A1 with quattro

22 December 2011, 16:41

Audi has revealed its range-topping A1 quattro with 188kW of turbo power on tap but don’t expect a flood of the models in South Africa – only 333 units will be built.

The very limited A1 quattro is the new headline act in Audi’s successful baby hatchback range. It's powered by a 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine capable of 188kW and 350Nm at 6000 and between 2500 and 4500rpm, respectively.

This A1 sprints to 100km/h in 5.7sec and has a top speed of 245km/h.

Power is delivered to the all-wheel system through a six-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission. The multi-plate clutch has been placed on the rear axle for the best weight distribution since the chassis has been tuned to be tauter for more dynamic activities. The front suspension uses a Macpherson arrangement, a four-link axle is at the rear.

The ESP includes a sport mode and can be switched off entirely for those track-day boast sessions.

The A1 quattro rolls on 18” cast alloy rims with a bespoke turbine design in white. The front brake discs are clenched by black calipers.

Picking up the contrasting theme, the A1 quattro is available only in white metallic with a gloss black roof. Further differentiators are the more-muscular front bumper, the gloss-black grille and red accents in the headlight clusters.

The grille, C pillar and hatch have quattro badges.

Use of black is extended to the hatch and diffuser and the diode tail lights have tinted housings. Polished dual tail pipes peep from beneath the rear bumper on the left and the right.

At 3987mm long, the A1 quattro is slightly longer than the regular A1, but the luggage capacity has shrunk to 210 litres (860 litres with the rear seats down).

A black leather interior with red contrasts awaits the A1 quattro driver.

The A1 quattro’s interior is dominated by nappa leather with contrasting rear seams. Sport seats are designated for the two front occupants that also come with bulkier side bolsters, integrated head restraints and quattro.

The driver’s left-foot rest and pedal caps are finished in brushed stainless steel, the instrument cluster has white needles, a red tachometer, a quattro logo and a colour display for the driver's info system.

ONE OF 333

The leather-wrapped, multifunction sport steering wheel has a flattened base with contrasting red stitching. It also has the car’s serial number.

High-end features include xenon-plus headlights, auto high-beam, adaptive brake lights, a diode interior lighting package, light and rain sensors, rear parking system, automatic aircon, storage package and cruise control.

The infotainment equipment includes a 14-speaker Bose sound system with CD changer, a digital radio tuner, the Audi music interface and MMI navigation plus.

Occupants can also use Audi connect, via Bluetooth, to connect to the Internet and access special web services, such as Google Earth, to the car.

The Audi A1 quattro will be available from the second half of 2012 to European customers but, given South Africa’s keen appetite for models bearing the German badges, some of the 333 units will likely reach our city streets.
