Are you a sugar addict?

08 April 2014, 15:20

Abuja - Many of us are not even aware of the copious amounts of sugar we’re consuming because manufactures are just s cunning.

Instead of tagging them ‘addictive’ and ‘dangerous’, they’re veiled under names we won’t easily recognise.

We’ve all heard of fructose, sucrose and lactose, but what about orbitol, maltitol, erythritol and xylitol?

Confused? So are we.

But, while the list is relentless, your craving needn’t be. Follow these tips to help crush the craving...

7 easy ways to kick your sugar habit

1. Eat breakfast

Eating breakfast has not only proven to help people realise their weight loss goals, but the added vitamins and minerals provide the extra oomph associated with mental acuity and emotional wellbeing.

2. Avoid the canteen

Or the local babbie for that matter. All those sweet temptations will have you in a total spin. Literally.  Instead, pack in a hearty meal from home –not only will you save big on money, but it’s almost always the healthier option too.

3. Don’t remove chocolates off your list entirely

Ask any woman...giving up your favourite Ferrero’s will only make you resentful in the end. Feeling starved and angry is a sure-fire way of losing determination. Grant yourself at least one ‘cheat day’ where you can indulge in the temptation you long for the most.

4. Choose plain instead of sweetened

Ever wondered what the secret to your neighbour’s gorgeously svelte figure is? Aside from benefitting from an active lifestyle, she probably walks right passed the artificially sweetened yogurt and opts for the naturally flavoured one instead.

5. Eat fruit

Yes, as boring as it sounds, fruit offers ALL the sweetness your body needs. In addition to instantly satisfying your sugar craving, the natural fibre within the fruit also keeps your blood sugar levels from rising.

6. Get more Zzzz...

Getting a proper night’s rest could also help. How, you may be speculating? Sleeping naturally decreases anxiety and a rise in stress, often leads to a rise in your cravings.

7. Walk it off

Have you heard of the feel-good hormone, serotonin? Next time, scrap the dessert and go for a walk after dinner. The physical activity will raise your serotonin levels, the same way sugar does.
