7 tips on keeping the passion alive

13 October 2011, 11:58

Almost everyone has a story to tell about walking in on their parents who were in the throes of passion. Mostly, the stories are wide-eyed tales of horror, as no one wants to think of their folks doing THAT.

Now that you’re a parent, what do you do when it’s time for romance with your partner? And how do you react if your toddler stumbles through to seek solace from a nightmare?

Some parents keep their bedroom door closed, or have a knocking rule, but those precautions don’t always work. The excuse that ‘mom and dad were just wrestling/tickling each other might not work- your children may even think you were fighting!

Short of avoiding passion for the next twenty or so years, there must be something you can do to avoid scarring your sensitive child’s mind, right?

How about these tips for keeping your love life private:

•    With young kids, put something outside your bedroom door, such as a soft toy, to remind them to knock.

•    Warn your teens that if the ‘do not disturb’ sign is up, it means your bedroom is out of bounds. Even a sock on the door handle can work.

•    Show affection outside of the bedroom, too, so it doesn’t seem too weird to your children.

•    Explain that when grown-ups cuddle, it is their ‘alone-time’.

•    Arrange dates when your kids go to sleep over at friends or relatives, and the whole night is given over to your romance.

•    Distract the kids for a half an hour by organising a treasure hunt in the garden (even scattering smarties will buy you some time!).

•    Remove the outside door handle to your bedroom.

Of course, for some couples the romance faded along with arrival of the first baby, so it’s not an issue, but it’s never too late to reinvent the love, and adjust to your tiny neighbours.
