7 things you should have when you're in your 30s

I have never been very taken with possessions. While I can appreciate a pretty shoe or a statement necklace as much as the next person, I can’t say that I have ever yearned for an item of clothing or agonised over an expensive handbag.
Retail therapy only depresses me, and functionality is usually the main thing I look for when I buy something.
So when I see these lists about what women should own by the time they’re 21, or 30 or 40 or whatever, I am always slightly confused at first, before I begin to worry that I might be missing something.
Am I failing as a human woman because I don’t have a bespoke designer dress? Does the fact that I don’t own 2000 thread count sheets mean I don’t love myself enough? And does the lack of diamond earrings mean no one ELSE loves me enough?
I hope not, but I'm open for debate if you want to take this to the comments section.
Yet, I do believe there are a few key things that a woman over 30 should aim to acquire (if she doesn’t have them yet). Here is my list:
• A pair of shoes that makes you feel sexy
Whether it’s crazy stilettos that you can’t walk in, but make your calves look awesome, or whether it’s your running shoes that make you feel strong and fit, sometimes the right shoe can change your entire mood.
• A friend who will tell it like it is
Of course you don’t always want to be confronted with the harsh truth, and everyone can use a couple of platitudes every now and then, but you need at least one person in your life who will be brutally honest about your looks, your mistakes and your weaknesses while keeping your best interests at heart.
• A working knowledge of your body and your sexuality
Young women and girls are still socialised to see sex passively – as something they have to give up, or have done to them. As you get older it is imperative to learn what turns you on, how you like to be made love to and how to reach orgasm. Sexual confidence is the most alluring thing you will ever own.
• An outfit that can be dressed up or down for when you need to look good fast
You’d be surprised how far a flattering dress or a good pantsuit can go in an emergency. Whether it’s for a last minute job interview or a unexpected hot date, or even a wedding - at a pinch - an outfit you look and feel good in is essential.
• A favourite author that can offer solace when you’re at your lowest
There are a couple of authors whose books I reread whenever the chips are down. They bring comfort and joy, and when you need to escape from your life for a bit, they offer you the safe haven you need.
• A female role model
For my 30th birthday my sister gave me a silver bangle engraved with: “What would Buffy do?” I cannot tell you how many times that has calmed me down, cheered me up and given me courage when I really needed it. I know, that might have more to do with my sister(s), than Buffy, but you know what I mean.
• A few foolproof recipes that you can make in your sleep and that never disappoints
You never know when you will have to cook something good and it’s always better to have a few stock recipes up your sleeve when the pressure is on. You don’t have to be Nigella – even if you’ve only mastered the art of the perfect fluffy omelette – this still counts.
