7 reasons to travel with young kids

09 June 2014, 14:34

Abuja - There are many debates around whether you should travel with your kids when they are still very young. Some say putting your kids on a plane turns everyone else’s flight into a disaster while others are of the opinion that travel is wasted on the young.

But despite all the effort involved when taking your kids on a holiday, it is one of the greatest experiences you can allow your kid to have.

Here are 7 reasons why you should travel with your kids while they are still little:

For some people this is exactly the reason why they don’t want to travel with babies as their nap time is seen as an inconvenience. But this time should actually be utilised. Your baby’s routine gives your days structure and since you are in fact on holiday, this is an ideal time to just relax, read a book or take a nap yourself.

Babies are portable
The smaller and younger your baby, the easier they are to travel with. Put them in a stroller or carry them in a carrier. This leaves you free to do all the sightseeing you want, with your baby happily coming along for the ride.

Feeding time is simple
A baby that is only breastfeeding can be your easiest travel companion. You don’t have to worry about fussy eaters, food allergies or hygiene in strange countries. If you use baby formula, make sure that you pack enough in case you can’t buy the same brand at your destination.

Beach sand vs the public playground
When babies reach the stage where everything they touch goes into their mouths, wouldn’t you prefer their first taste of sand to be that on a beautiful beach, rather than the dirty sandbox at your local playground?

Utilise public transport
Make your travels more fun by using public transport, the way the locals do. This is so much more exciting for toddlers, as it might be a mode of transport they have never used before. You will also save a lot of money on rental cars and taxis and this way you don’t have to worry about lugging a car seat along.

Travel to kid friendly places
Nowadays many restaurants and tourist attractions don’t allow children which can cause you a fair amount of frustration. However, many cultures and in many countries, children are adored. If you travel with your kids to these places, you will really be treated in a uniquely special way, making your holiday one to remember!

Your kids become adaptable
The younger you start travelling with your kids, the sooner they will become more adaptable and easier to travel with. They become used to the change in their routine and will get excited about seeing wonderful places and learning new things. Children are like sponges and will absorb an enormous amount of information– which is proof that travel is definitely not wasted on the young.
