5 tips for selling your car

24 February 2014, 10:23

Abuja - So it's finally time to bid farewell to the old jalopy. Follow these tips to ensure a smoother process when selling your car.

Avoid trading your car in

Unless you are not concerned with getting the most out of selling you car, trading your car in at a dealer is not worth it. The dealer at the end of the day is a businessman. This means that he will have to make profit from the trade-in. Selling the car yourself will ensure that all the money go to you.

Thoroughly clean your car
This seems like an obvious statement but sometimes it is easier to think "the car is not new anyways so I'll sommer take it to the carwash and that should do it". Nope. You should scrutinise all the dirt and scratches in the car. Having a polished car will make you car easier to sell.

Do not accept cheques
People like to tata ma chance. Do not accept cheques as you cannot recognise a fraudster. A bad cheque is the last thing you need after you have already given your car away.

Meet in a public location
The internet has been a catalyst to immeasurable happiness but it has also facilitated more opportunities for criminals. Make sure you meet in a public space preferably during the day too.

Keep all your papers
Make sure that you have kept your paper work (roadworthy certificate and proof of car service). This will make selling your car easier as you will have proof that your car is roadworthy and that you have serviced your car regularly.
