5 things you need to know about the 2016 AfricaMagic Awards

Cape Town – Africa's film and TV stars will shine bright at the fourth annual AfricaMagic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) in Lagos on Saturday.

In association with MultiChoice, the awards set out to recognise the best that the African film and television industry has to offer.

Here are five things you need to know about this year's awards.

1. When and where

The ceremony will take place on Saturday, 5 March in Lagos. It will be aired live on all the AfricaMagic Channels on DStv (150, 152, 153, 154, 155)and Gotv. The red carpet kicks off at 17:00 and the awards show at 20:00.

2. The hosts

IK Osakioduwa returns to host the awards for a fourth time. IK has attained continental acclaim having successfully hosted some of Africa’s biggest shows and programmes.

South African presenter and actress Minnie Dlamini will co-host the show. 

“I am very excited to be on the biggest platform for celebrating talent in Africa. The AMVCAs recognise and celebrate film and television talent across Africa, and as a proud African, I am truly delighted to play a role in this celebration,” says Minnie. 

3. The biggest nominees

Three feature films have managed to scoop the bulk of the nominations:

Leading with nine nominations, Dry is inspired by the real life events of a 13-year old girl. It's central theme focuses on Vesicovaginal fistula condition and the child marriage controversy in Nigeria.

The award winning South African film comes in a close second with eight nominations. The coming of age drama tells the story of a young woman living in South Africa who works as a mechanic to keep her father's business running.

Road to Yesterday

The Nigerian road romantic drama which tells the story of an estranged married couple, hoping to mend their strained marriage whilst on a road trip to a relative’s funeral, comes in at number three with seven nominations.

5. How the winners are chosen

The winners are determined by the viewers! Viewers could cast their votes for their favourites in the 24 categories. Voting has since closed.
