5 Decorating Don'ts

29 February 2012, 15:23

Doing up your home doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Here are some faux pas to avoid.

roundup of the most important DO NOTS when it comes to making your pad look pretty...

Don't Overlook the Importance of Having a Focal Point
It’s important because without something bold, a room can seem either boring or cluttered. Think of it this way: A focal point usually draws in the eye and creates interest, whereas the rest of the décor balances the area.

A focal point could be anything from an architectural feature to a striking piece of furniture or artwork - as long as it is eye-catching and aesthetically pleasing.

Don't invest in (Crappy) Trends
Overbearing floral wallpaper and shag carpets are just two examples of bad trends of the past. Remember that if it’s TOO dramatic, it’s probably got an expiry date, so rather invest in timeless, classic pieces that will last throughout the years.

Don’t Let Your (Small) Budget Stop You
There’s no reason why you can’t have the home of your dreams, even on a tight budget. You just have to be clever about it.

Spend some time researching styles that you like before deciding on one. Don’t be afraid of second-hand furniture, restore and reuse old items where you can and shop online for the best deals.

Don’t Forget to Accessorise
Sometimes, it really is all in the detail. Accessories will make your room look and feel fresh, whilst tying in everything else.  With a few of the right pieces - like scatter cushions, vases, curtains and etc. - you will bring life and personality to your home.

Don’t Go Overboard
Less is often more, so don’t go bos. Instead, make a few of your pieces ‘pop’ by letting them stand out. Going overboard with one theme or colour can make a room seem tacky and distracting. You want to create a peaceful yet attractive space that is inviting to others.
