Scientology 'helped Tom Cruise find wife'

03 September 2012, 15:17

Los Angeles - A new report in the October issue of US magazine Vanity Fair claims that top Scientologists arranged Tom Cruise's marriages.

Vanity Fair special correspondent Maureen Orth uncovered the secrets behind the marriages in Scientology and revealed how heads of Scientology set up auditions for finding Tom the ideal new wife in an article titled: 'Tom Cruise's Scientology Marriages: The Secret Wife-Auditioning Process Before Katie Holmes, Revealed'.

Orth reports that in 2004, the Church of Scientology embarked on a top-secret project headed by Michelle 'Shelly' Miscavige, the wife of Scientology Chairman of the Board David Miscavige. Shelly was soon after given the task in finding a girlfriend for Tom.

'A very important mission'

According to several sources, the organisation had devised an elaborate auditioning process in which actresses, who were already Scientology members, were called in and told they were auditioning for a new training film. In this interview they were then asked a series of questions, including details about their sex lives.

Hollywood has for years been abuzz with rumours that beauties such Jessica Alba, Sofia Vergara and Scarlett Johansson had been approached to by Scientology as prospective wives.

One such actress who was groomed for Tom, was Iranian-born, London-raised Nazanin Boniadi. The report states that part of Nazanin's grooming included losing her braces, red hair and breaking up with her current boyfriend.

Tom and Nazanin started dating in November 2004. A friend close to Nazanin told Vanity Fair that she was only told by chiefs that she would be embarking on a "very important mission."

Nazanin said she had a "tough time" adjusting to Tom Cruise and his lifestyle, and was also reprimanded by David Miscavige after a dinner where she asked him: "Excuse me", several times. According to Scientology beliefs, this is not acceptable, as respectful communication is "crucial".

Sent to do hard labour

The relationship ended in January 2005, and Nazanin was sent to a celebrity Scientology centre in Florida, where she then did hard labour as a result of her bad behaviour, reveals Orth.

In response to the article, a Scientology spokesperson said that the church does not punish their members in such a manner.

Tom Cruise's divorce from his third wife Katie Holmes was finalised on 20 August 2012, less than two months after the papers were filed. Tom divorced second wife Nicole Kidman just 3 days before their 10th anniversary, and was married to Mimi Rogers - who introduced him to Scientology - from 1987-1990.
