She came onto the scene with a collabo with Nameless, aptly titled Sunshine which was an instant hit. The beautiful, sultry songbird followed it up with Kesho and has just released My Reason featuring Mombasa based artist Cannibal. News24 Kenya caught up with Habida, and this is what she had to say to News24 Kenya's MAUREENE DANIELLE.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?
Watching movies, either at the cinema or at home. Writing poetry and reading inspirational books.
WHERE IN NAIROBI IS YOUR FAVOURITE HANGOUT?
Onami they have the best Apple Martinis.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN YOU ARE WRITING AND PERFORMING YOUR MUSIC?
My Inspirations come from life. Life is like a big story so I pull from that.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL STYLE?
My style is different. I would say it’s like an African R&B. It’s a fusion of my R&B background from the United States and different sounds from Kenya and other influences from countries in East Africa.
ONE THING NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT YOU?
That would be hard as I am a pretty open person. I am a major germaphobe up until now only my husband knew the extent of it. (she laughs)!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE ON AND OFF STAGE?
On stage it’s retro, flashy, and designer. Off stage I am very casual. I am a jeans and tennis shoes person.
AS A BUDDING ARTIST IN KENYA, HAVE YOU FOUND IT HARD PENETRATING THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AND GETTING GIGS?
I would say to a certain extent. But I have also been through several things that have probably also contributed to hampering the process. For instance I had to take a year off to give birth to my amazing daughter. There is also the move we made to Tanzania. I believe this has made it slightly difficult, but now that I am back, hands on and focused on my career, I believe there will be a change.
HAS MARRIAGE AND MOTHERHOOD HAMPERED YOUR MUSIC CAREER OR ADDED TO IT?
It has not hampered but paused it for about 6 months when I chose to take time off to get to know and be with my baby. Now it has added to my determination, because I want to give her a great life.
WE SAW YOU DO A COLLABO WITH A COASTAL ARTIST AND A NAIROBI ONE, BOTH MALE, ANY PLANS FOR OTHER COLLABOS, AND FEMALE?
Collabos are always good, I would love to do a collabo with a female singer from another country. That is my desire, so I’m working on that.
WHAT IS YOUR STRATEGY FOR PENETRATING THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET?
My strategy is to partner and work with artists and producers from other regions. So far I am working on a project with an artist from Germany and will be diversifying shortly with different opportunities that are coming up.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?
To grow my brand and be the best I can be.
Habida is one to watch.
