Nairobi - She is young, fresh, fun but most of all talented, and already making waves in Kenya’s music scene with her first single, ‘Oh My’. I caught up with YOme after her first professional photoshoot.
As I walked into the room the first thing that struck me was her infectious smile as we were introduced to each other.
Born fourteen years ago in Sweden, Mombasa based 14 year-old YOme is already making waves on social media when she debuted on Twitter, Face Book, YouTube and other sites.
Having relocated to Kenya from Sweden just over four months ago, YOme is feeling at home, inspired and ready to launch her music career.
Growing up listening to ‘Old Skool’ greats likes of Mary J Blige, the late Biggie, Nas and her number one fan, producer and father Wawesh, YOme is not in it for the fun but “because it is in my blood and I want to change how girls think. I believe girls are the same as the guys and just as powerful.”
‘Oh My’ was written by her, with a little help from her father. “My father and I share a very close relationship, he is my best friend and so when we are in studio together, I listen to the beat and it is easy to come up with the lyrics.”
One can tell that YOme is daddy’s little girl, but do not let that fool you to think that she is spoilt and not hardworking or talented. She is promising Kenyans that she will work on good quality music, that is different and to set trends in a music scene riddled with unprofessionalism and one hit wonders.
Having grown up around music, with a hit producing father and a mum who loved listening to music, YOme’s love of music was piqued at a young age.
YOme has big plans to explore her singing talent and even branch of later to other genres. “I want to be a 360 degrees entertainer,” she said.
On collabos collaborations with artists who she looks up to in Kenya, YOme would love to work with Anto and Muthoni the Drummer Queen.
Music is not her only love, as she enjoyed playing basketball but one of her dreams is to one day put up a youth centre down in Mombasa where other young people like her can hone their talents as they learn arts, music and theatre. Having volunteered during the summer at a community centre back in Sweden, this is a project that appealed to her and she wants to do more in Kenya.
As for hanging out with friends, she has made a few close friends since moving to Kenya but she plans to take her time as she gets more familiar with the country and finds her feet in the music industry.
For now click the link below and have a listen to YOme’s premier track, ‘Oh My’ on You Tube as we await her to drop her music video.
