Marketer tasks artists on indigenous music

16 October 2013, 08:43

Abuja - Okorie Odo, the chief executive officer of Galaxy Impressions Concepts Ltd., an Abuja-based music marketing outfit, on Monday advised artists to show more interest in production of indigenous music.

Odo, who gave the advice in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said this would ensure the promotion of the country's cultural heritage.

He stressed the need for artists to address social vices and country's poor image through their music themes.

"There is need raise awareness about the impact which western culture had brought on the social, economic, political and cultural spheres in the country.

"Traditional music use instruments to portray the country in good light.

"This indigenous instrument must be exploited positively to sustain a positive image for the country and in this drive we must pursue a quick re-orientation of our people and especially our youths.’’

Odo added that promoting indigenous music would facilitate the sustenance, acceptance and consumption of Nigerian musical products in the global market.

He said that this would further boost the nation's economic development.

"The most common vehicle of communication is music, also it is a powerful tool for change and a great tool for generation of income for most developed countries of the world,’’ he said.

He appealed to the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to fund the music industry to enable it promote Nigerian music internationally.

He further called on the government to help fight piracy, which he described as a common enemy of the industry.
