Game of Thrones actor's ear bitten off

27 March 2013, 16:56

London - Clive Mantle, who plays Lord Greatjon Umber in the epic HBO drama series Game of Thrones, had part of his ear bitten off during an argument over noise, reports the BBC.

The British actor was involved in a dispute over noise at a hotel in Newcastle, England.

His agency's spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that part of Mantle's ear was bitten off during the altercation in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mantle, 55, best known for his role as Lord Greatjon Umber on the first season of Game of Thrones, was allegedly attacked by a 32-year-old man who has been charged with wounding with intent. He is set to appear in a UK court next month.

'It was savage'

The piece of ear was retrieved and later reattached by surgeons after Mantle was rushed to hospital by police, reports The Mirror.

His agent, Bryn Newton, told the UK paper that a pyjama-clad Mantle politely asked a guest at the hotel to keep the noise down.

"He returned to bed but when he went back outside there were two drunken Scotsmen," said Newton.

"He said to them, 'If you don’t keep the noise down I am going to call security'.

"That’s when they set about him. Even though he is a big guy they got him on the ground.

"One of them bit the top part of his right ear off. It was savage."

Mantle is a recognisable face on UK television, having had a long-running role on medical series Casualty and spin-off Holby City as well as roles on the BBC's Sherlock and the Channel 4 comedy Shameless.

The third season of Game of Thrones is set to premiere in the US this Sunday and in South Africa on M-Net on 12 April at 21:30.
