A Prince has been born

23 July 2013, 07:51

London - Palace officials have confirmed that the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate, has given birth to a baby boy who will be the third in line to the British throne.

The baby was born at 16:24 weighing 3.8kg after the Duchess went into labour early on Monday morning and was rushed to St Mary's Hospital in central London with Prince William by her side.

Kate gave birth in the private Lindo Wing of the hospital, where Princess Diana gave birth to William and his younger brother, Prince Harry.

She was looked after by a top-notch medical team led by royal gynecologist Dr Marcus Setchell.

The name:

The name of the newborn Prince of Cambridge will be revealed in due course. According to royal experts James and George are big choices for the young prince - as there's strong precedent of kings of that name.

The announcement:

Clarence House tweeted that "her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight".

William first shared the news of the birth of his son with his father and grandmother before it was made public via a press release.

Keeping with tradition a messenger travelled with the news by car from the hospital to Buckingham Palace, carrying a piece of paper detailing the infant's gender, weight and time of birth.

The bulletin was then posted on a wooden easel on the palace's forecourt for everyone to see.

A Statement by Prince Charles:

Prince Charles also released a statement after the official announcement saying: “Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild.  It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.

"Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."

Prime minister tweets:

British prime minister, David Cameron also took to Twitter to express his joy over the royal baby news: “I'm delighted for the Duke and Duchess now their son has been born. The whole country will celebrate. They'll make wonderful parents”.

Life for the newborn Prince:

The royal couple and their newborn are expected to spend much of their time in the coming years in renovated quarters at Kensington Palace, where William and Harry also spent much of their childhood.

Royal officials say Kate and William will try to give their child as normal an upbringing as possible. That may be challenging in an age when the British royals are treated as major world celebrities.
