5 things you need to know about Sarah Jessica Parker's new show

12 October 2016, 17:01

Cape Town - Sarah Jessica Parker takes the lead a brand new HBO series, Divorce

In the dramedy she makes a clean break from the comedic Carrie Bradshaw character she made famous in Sex and the City.

This time around, SJP portrays suburban wife and mother, Frances, who finds herself starting over, reassessing her life and her marriage to long-time husband Robert (played by Oscar-nominee Thomas Haden Church).

Here are 5 things to know about the show:

1. SJP has been developing the series for 4 years.

Parker and her producing partner Alison Benson spent four years crafting the show's concept while recruiting other off-screen talent

" There wasn’t a script, specifically-there was a story I was wanting to tell and had been curious about -the story of a marriage and an affair, and this was before The Affair was on the air, and what does that mean, how can that work in a marriage, and what is an ordinary middle-class marriage in America right now?”
“I hadn’t seen it portrayed on cinema or on television in a really long time, and in a way that I was most curious about. I don’t think this marriage is uniquely American, but I think that there is a time and a place about it that speaks to an economy and the hopes and dreams of a particular generation of people, and the disappointments in others and themselves.”

2. Goodbye Carrie, Hello Francis.

Her new role is so far removed from the famous Carrie Bradshaw.

When asked if she took this role to purge herself from Carrie she said, " "I don't want to be done with that association," she says. "I loved it! But I'm an actor, I always was, and now my job is to share who Frances is with the audience."

3. Meet the supporting cast

The dramedy also stars Emmy-nominee Molly Shannon (Enlightened), Talia Balsam (Mad Men), Tracy Letts (Homeland), Sterling Jerins (World War Z) and Charlie Kilgore (Moonrise Kingdom).

4. From one enviable wardrobe to another

Carrie Bradshaw had an enviable fashion sense and so does Francis. Speaking to InStyle  the show's costume designer revealed that the dresses are vintage one of a kind. Most of them were found in thrift shops and online on eBay and Etsy.

5. When and where to watch it

The show airs Express from the US on Tuesdays at 01:00 and in Prime Time on Fridays at 21:00 on M-Net Edge (DStv 102).

The first episode is also available online on DStv.com and DStv now
