Sluggish trade at Nairobi bourse on Tuesday

Nairobi (Xinhua) -- Some 15 million shares valued at 3.7 million U.S. dollars were traded at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) Tuesday, up from 12 million shares worth 2.8 million dollars as the market registered low trading.

However, despite the slow trade, some stocks in the 20 Share Index led by Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) rose to lift the key index 16 points up to close the day at 3,223.80.

Similarly, the All Share Index (NASI) edged 0.09 points higher to stand at 131.58 while the NSE 25 Share Index was up 11.54 points to stand at 3,456.05.

Kenya's leading telecom Safaricom was the day's biggest mover, trading 8 million shares at unchanged price of 0.19 dollars.

In the banking sector, some 4.4 million shares were traded, representing 28 percent of the day's traded volume.

Equity Bank actively moved 3.2 million shares at a declined price of 0.26 dollars while KCB rose 5 percent to 0.28 dollars to move 441,000 shares.

In the energy and petroleum sector, some 1.1 million shares were traded, with KenGen moving 764,000 shares at a high of 0.07 dollars while KenolKobil moved the rest.

The bond market registered improved activity, with securities worth 26 million dollars transacted.
