Facebook CEO Zuckerberg Samples Kenya’s Mobile Innovation Space

02 September 2016, 21:07

Nairobi - Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg visited the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, to meet entrepreneurs and developers, and explore the country’s mobile-money ecosystem on the second leg of his trip to sub-Saharan Africa.

“Just landed in Nairobi! I’m here to meet with entrepreneurs and developers, and to learn about mobile money -- where Kenya is the world leader,” Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page.

He dropped by iHub, where entrepreneurs can build and prototype their ideas, and met two engineers that came up with a system for people to use mobile payments to buy small amounts of cooking gas in a nation where many use charcoal or firewood for cooking.

The US-based social media company plans to launch a satellite later this week that will “beam down connectivity” to extend internet access to rural parts of sub-Saharan Africa, where it has 84 million users.
