Dar Es Salaam - Tanzania's year-on-year inflation rate fell to 5.6 percent in December from 6.2 percent a month earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday.
The decline in the rate of inflation mirrored a slower rise in the prices of commodities during the month, the statistics office said.
The food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation rate decreased to 6.0 percent in December from 7.2 percent recorded in the previous month, the statistics office said, adding that the monthly headline inflation rate rose by 1.3 percent during the month from 0.6 percent in November.
The government has previously stated it expects inflation to decline to 5 percent by June this year.
