Safaricom's M-pesa bags another award

Nairobi - Safaricom's M-pesa money transfer service has been awarded the best operator-led mobile money service at the sixth Mobile Money Global Awards held in Dubai in the United Arabs Emirates.

Delegates from UAE, United States of America, Afghanistan and Qatar recognized the success that the money transfer offering had achieved in the markets and hailed the huge potential was ahead.

“This award is an endorsement of the role that M-pesa continues to play in the advancement of the financial inclusion agenda in Kenya and we remain firm in our commitment that we will continue to introduce innovative financial tools for our customers,” said Safaricom’s General Manager of Financial Services, Betty Mwangi.

The offering has continued to gain prominence internationally owing to its efficiency and convenience in money transfer since its launch five years ago. Following the success, Safaricom plans in store to expand its M-pesa servers from Germany to Kenya.

The firm has also awarded the giant Chinese firm, Huawei, the tender to upgrade the M-pesa service to a new level that would enable users make instant bill payments as well as increase transaction rates from 200 per second to 600.

Safaricom’s half-year results for 2013/2014 indicated that active M-pesa customers stood at 11.6 million with 18.15, million registered customers.
