Safaricom, leads AfricaCom nominations

15 October 2013, 09:16

Nairobi - Local mobile network operator, Safaricom Limited, is among the leading contenders for awards at the upcoming AfricaCom Awards.

The company has been nominated in several key awards, among them the Industry Personality of the Year, which sees its General Manager of Financial Services, Betty Mwangi-Thuo, nominated alongside industry heavyweights Chris Wood, the WIOCC Chief Executive Officer, and Nick Rudnick, the Liquid Telecom Chief Executive Officer, Nic Rudnick.

Mwangi-Thuo is hailed as has previously been named one of Africa’s most influential women in technology this year. The executive has largely been credited with spearheading Safaricom’s globally recognized mobile money transfer service, M-Pesa.

Safaricom is nominated in three other awards, namely, the Rural Telecoms Award for its Vuma online offering, Best Mobile Money Service for M-Shwari and the Most Innovative Service for its Cashless Payment Solution.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa on November 13 at the AfricaCom awards ceremony and gala dinner.

AfricaCom, scheduled for the coastal city’s International Conference Centre, is the continent’s premier annual technology event.

Now in their sixth year, the AfricaCom Awards are recognised as the premier accolade for firms and executives operating in Africa's digital market.

The AfricaCom Awards are open to any operator, vendor and regulator, of any size and any location who offers solutions or products anywhere within the continent.

Liquid Telecom, Orange and Safaricom have emerged with the most nominations for this year’s awards.
