22 July 2013, 13:04
Cape Town - PayPal has accidentally credited a man with $92 quadrillion - making him the richest man in the world, according to CNN.
Chris Reynolds opened his June PayPal email statement to find that his account balance was $92 233 720 368 547 800.
Reynolds reported the matter to Paypal and his balance again reflected the correct amount of $0.
The online payment service provider said in a statement that it was a mistake and that the firm would donate an undisclosed amount of cash to a cause of Reynolds' choice.
PayPal provides person-to-person payments online but also offers payment options for merchants and has also moved into digital wallets.
Man naps on keyboard, transfers millions
Also in June, Reuters reported that a German bank employee accidentally transformed a minor transfer into a €222m order after falling asleep on his keyboard.
The man was supposed to transfer just €62.40 from a bank account belonging to a retiree, but instead "fell asleep for an instant, while pushing onto the number 2 key on the keyboard" - making it a huge €222 222 222.22 order.
The bank discovered the mistake shortly afterwards and corrected the error.
