Lipa na M-pesa extended to Shell

Nairobi - Vivo Energy Kenya and Safaricom have entered into a partnership that will enable Shell Petrol Company customers in the country buy fuel via the cashless payment solution, Lipa na M-pesa.
The service will be launched in two phases with the first phase covering 95 Shell service stations while the remaining 22 stations will be covered before the end of this month. The service would be offered free to Shell customers.
"This service will complement the current cash, Shell card and Visa debit/credit card payment options," read a statement from Vivo Energy.
Vivo Energy Managing Director, Polycarp Igathe, said that the service would not only be used for fuel payments but also for the purchase goods at the company's convenient stores.
"Our customers will not incur additional charges whenever they use Lipa na M-pesa service to pay for their goods and services at our outlets," added Igathe.
Vivo Energy said that it was taking up the new partnership as a way of adapting to the ever-dynamic regional business environment to ensure that they remain relevant in business.
Safaricom has previously collaborated with various firms in the country such as the Kenya Power Company that has enabled individuals to pay for their power via mobile services.
Safaricom launched Lipa na M-pesa in June. The service facilitates payment of salaries, utility payments, promotional payouts and dividend payments aimed at small and medium sized businesses.
