Kenya Airways halts Juba flights

17 December 2013, 15:25

Nairobi - Kenya Airways cancelled its flights to Juba following the attempted coup in South Sudan.

The attempted coup led to the closure of Juba airport.

In a statement sent to the press, Kenya Airways Chief Operating Officer, Nginze Mbuvi, said that the airline was monitoring developments in Juba and would provide information once it receive it from relevant authorities.

“Among the Kenya Airways flights affected are KQ350/351, KQ352/353 and KQ354/355,” he said in the statement.

Fighting broke out in the South Sudan capital of Juba on Sunday night and persisted through to Monday morning in what the President of South Sudan said was an attempted coup by former Vice President Riek Machar.

The cancellation of flights has affected many travelers to and from South Sudan. Flights to and from Juba have been on the increase after peace returned to the nation after years of fighting.

The nation became independent in 2011 after the people of South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for separation from the Khartoum government.

President Kiir has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew on Juba while stating that the attempted coup was unsuccessful.
