KES 5m fine for poachers
25 July 2013, 16:12
Nairobi - Business Daily reports that the proposed Wildlife Bill, which is set for introduction in the National Assembly soon has stiffer penalties for poachers.
Poachers would be sent to jail for 15 years and fined KES 5 million for illegal killing of wildlife, Environment, Water and Natural Resources secretary Judi Wakhungu said.
According to a government directive, all poaching cases will be prosecuted as economic crimes, once the new Wildlife Bill is enacted, so the penalties and sentences will be punitive in order to discourage poaching and ivory traffickers.
