Consumers hit by high food prices
05 September 2013, 08:18
Nairobi - It has been revealed that some traders are taking advantage of the VAT Bill by applying it to goods that were exempted from tax thus increasing their prices.
A spot check in supermarkets and some retailers by The Standard on Wednesday, showed that the price of bread had been increased although it was not on the list of items subjected to the bill.
Prices of maize flour, rice, fresh eggs, tomatoes and onions have also been increased even as Cabinet Secretary to the National Treasury Henry Rotich told traders not to take this opportunity to exploit consumers.
