Airtel to help you locate your friend

12 September 2013, 14:38

Nairobi - Mobile service provider Airtel has partnered with Gecko Landmarks to offer a text-based location service to its customers.

Dubbed “mLocator”, the service will enable customers to locate friends and family using a short message service code. The firms described this as a first in the local mobile network sector.

“This innovative and unique service that enables our customers to locate their friends, family and loved ones through SMS from their Airtel SIM card, is yet another demonstration of our commitment to improving the lives of our customers through convenient and relevant mobile solutions,” Airtel Kenya Managing Director, Shivan Bhargava, said.

Previously, Airtel has been the first in the market to launch a locator service that uses landmarks that are locally well-known, such as buildings, parks, bridges and farms to deliver accurate location information.

The company, which has a subscriber base of about 5 million, is the second largest mobile network operator in Kenya.

Finland-based Gecko Landmarks enables location based services to be relevant for the majority of the world population.

Its landmark data is already used every day by millions as its customers offer landmark location as part of their service in most countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
