Lilongwe - An angry mob has allegedly burnt seven people do death in Malawi after claims that they were found in possession of human bones.
According to Nyasa Times, the mob attacked the group before setting them alight following claims that the men had been carrying bones belonging to a human being.
Kirby Kaunga, Police Officer-In-Charge in the Nsanje district of the country, confirmed the incident, adding that an investigation was currently under way, with no arrests having been made so far.
Despite the trade in human body parts being illegal in Malawi, cases are on the increase due to a demand for human bones that exists within the country's black market.
Believed to possess magical powers, many of the human remains being traded have been found to belong to people with albinism.
Just last month, four Malawian nationals were convicted for being in possession of human bones belonging to an albino citizen.
According to a previous News24 report, the four were said to have had plans to sell the bones to a businessman when they were reported to police officials.
The convicts have since been sentenced to four years imprisonment each, with hard labour.
